The Role

JOB TITLE: Robotics Engineer

Where you fit

  • As part of the Robotics team in the Engineering Technology Materials and Robotics Department, a Robotics Engineer focuses on developing Robotic technology in partnership with external Robotics companies, Universities, and service providers to support Robotic Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair (IMR) activities as well as other areas of robotics application such as logistics.
  • The Robotics Engineer supports all Lines of Businesses (LOBs), depending on the priorities and needs. Being based in India, a key focus for the Robotics Engineer is supporting Shell’s assets in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and APAC (Asia Pacific) regions. The Robotics Engineer is expected to drive robotics innovations throughout the different D-phases (viz. Discover, Develop, Demonstrate and Deploy), maturing the technology and embedding robotics in Shell’s day-to-day activities – albeit being supported by (senior) team members. This will encompass identifying promising technologies, confirming business case, establishing basis of design and performance specification for intended applications, conducting feasibility assessment, system qualification, field trials, and executing deployments. Key elements for this position include having commercial acumen and managing partnerships/interfaces to deliver through others across the entire technology life cycle.

What’s the role?

  • Interface with staff in Engineering Technology, wider Projects & Technology (P&T) and asset teams.
  • Communicate with technical authorities, Principal Experts, and/or Subject Matter Experts on robotics deployments.
  • Identify opportunities where robotics can significantly increase efficiency while reducing cost and HSSE risks.
  • Be responsible for safe execution of Robotic deployments.
  • Carry out technology value assessment to prioritize work and execute deployment projects to realize the values.
  • Work cross-functionally and cross regionally to achieve technology deliverables and capture upside.
  • Lead delivery of robotics technologies to achieve transformational step change in all LOBs for Shell, aiming robotics as the standard procedures for future.
  • Deliver robotics technologies pertaining to robotics and automation, leveraging both Shell internal capabilities and external 3rd party technologies/innovations
  • Collaborate closely with other team members and deliver joint goals together.
  • Manage robotics vendors including contracts.
  • Work with Contracting and Supply Chain to develop commercialization strategy.

What we need from you

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in relevant Engineering fields. Preference would be given to PHD/postgraduate with degree/specialization in Robotics.
  • Familiar with the robotics industry, with good knowledge of current robotics landscape
  • Good knowledge on robotic assembly, various components used to build a robot, various sensors, their integration, and signal transfer.
  • At least 3+ years of research and/or industry experiences working with robots, automation and their integration in both breadth and depth, complemented by good knowledge of related disciplines.  Working experience of AI, ML, sensors, electric system, controls, particularly in O&G related Robotics solutions, is a big plus.
  • Familiarity of electrical certification requirements of robotic system.
  • Proven track record of business analysis skills: capable to determine the “problem worth solving” with robotics with a solid foundation.
  • Familiar with systems engineering, requirement development, and interface control management.
  • Able to take sound technical decisions in coordination with technical authorities, project, and asset team to ensure top class project/technology delivery.
  • Experience in project & 3rd party management.
  • Self-driven/self-starter and delivery focused, comfortable with balancing multiple priorities and stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder management skills. Must have a variety of influencing styles to align and collaborate with key partners internally/externally and across seniority levels. Know how to engage tactfully to get things done, and to develop trust and credibility among varied interfaces.
