ABB Component Engineer (80-100%)

 The Component Engineer is responsible for the optimization of (existing) component portfolios required to manufacture Traction Systems and Products. For a wide range of electrical and mechanical components, the Component Engineer will work closely with Component Responsibles in R&D and Engineering and Supply Chain Managers. He/she analyzes form-fit-function of components and selects qualifying/compatible components from various sources per design specifications and sourcing strategies. The Component Engineer will also oversee testing, implementation and maintenance of the component, monitoring obsolescence and identifying alternative components based on the requirements and critical parameters. Also, the Component Engineer is supporting the Supply Chain in cost-cut activities and as well for product relocations.

  This position reports to the Team leader Global Product Life Cycle Management.

Your responsibilities

  • Advises Component Responsible on component costs, quality, lead times, obsolescence, replacements and multiple source issues while interfacing with internal stakeholders and suppliers
  • Reviews and analyzes components used in current product and/or proposed for new product development; determines current availability, expected lifecycle and alternate source options when available
  • Ensures components are selected in accordance with global sourcing strategies, including life-cycle, quality, and overall supply chain risk
  • Updates master component database, e.g. with environmental and regulatory data for components (RoHS or equivalent) or component substance compositions (REACH, EN 45545)
  • Identifies and provides initial qualification for second and third sources for components that are currently single sourced.
  • Develops qualification test plan for approval of any alternate sources
  • Conducts component level testing and maintains test records of all qualification results
  • Provides detailed analysis of differences between first / second / third source data sheets
  • Monitors product bill of materials for end of life parts, targeting for earliest possible communication to the Component Responsible

Your background

  • A degree/background in Electrical Engineering (Technician/Bachelor)
  • Minimum 1-2 years of related work experience in Components Engineering or Hardware Engineering
  • Technical knowledge for power electronics preferred
  • Experience in working in supply chain/engineering within a manufacturing and engineering environment is an advantage
  • Design or Test experience for component qualification and product applications preferred
  • Working knowledge of test equipment / programming tools required to verify components is an advantage
  • Strong communication skills with ability to relay technical information in English (verbal, written, and interpersonal)
  • Analytical ability to determine and develop solutions to moderately complex problems
  • Flexibility to respond to urgent project requests and/or changing priorities
  • Experience of working (either by telephone, e-mail or directly) with people in multiple countries and cultures, exchanging information
